Sea trials for the groundbreaking Super Sub, developed by U-Boat Worx, have been successfully completed off the coast of Curaçao. Built as a one-off custom commission for an undisclosed client, the vessel is being hailed as the fastest and most technologically advanced private submersible ever created.
Superyachts cruise the waves; some even skim above them on hydrofoils. Yet the deep blue continues to beckon their owners. At least four superyachts already feature so-called Nemo lounges—panoramic observation rooms set below the waterline, where guests can gaze into Poseidon’s realm without leaving a plush sofa or setting down a martini. Designers’ archives hold concepts for fully submersible megayachts, but until those become reality, modern-day followers of Jacques Piccard and Jacques-Yves Cousteau explore the depths in miniature submarines.
Dutch firm U-Boat Worx, a pioneer in the industry, made waves a few years ago with the Nemo—the lightest minisub on the market. Weighing just 2.5 tonnes, the two-person craft can be towed behind a passenger car and operates at depths of up to 100 metres for eight hours, though its top speed is a modest 5.5 km/h.
Its newest creation, however, is a far more formidable proposition—and, crucially, much faster. The Super Sub glides through the water with the ease and pace not quite of a dolphin, but at least of a briskly moving walrus: over 16 km/h. Its appearance, meanwhile, evokes a starship from The Fifth Element or Star Wars.
The true innovation lies in how the Super Sub moves beneath the surface. It does not simply descend and ascend—it flies. Its propulsion system, featuring four main thrusters delivering 100 kW of horizontal thrust, enables dynamic climbs and descents at angles of up to 45 degrees, as well as banked turns of up to 30 degrees. The company’s engineers describe the piloting experience as "controlled acceleration."
With an operational depth of 300 metres, an endurance of up to eight hours, and a cruising range of 10 nautical miles (roughly 18.5 km), the new submersible pairs high speed with serious research capabilities. This allows the owner to survey vast areas in a single dive—whether exploring coral reefs, vertical underwater walls, or shipwrecks.
This emphasis on dynamism and driving excitement does not come at the expense of safety. The Super Sub has received full certification from classification society DNV. It is equipped with a highly precise sonar system that continuously scans the seabed and can automatically adjust the vessel’s trajectory as it approaches its depth limit. The panoramic acrylic cockpit seems to vanish underwater, offering the pilot and two passengers an immersive, almost surreal sense of floating in the midst of the marine landscape.
