Lürssen launched Cosmos, a 114m fuel-cell yacht

A 1D ice classed vessel uses methanol to generate energy that powers its engines and onboard systems.
The Lürssen shipyard has launched the 114.2-meter megayacht Project Cosmos. Also known as Project 13759, this groundbreaking vessel is the first Lürssen superyacht to feature fuel-cell technology.

"Fuel-cell propulsion systems require minimal maintenance and are more efficient than diesel engines," explained Peter Lürssen, the head of the shipyard, when the German company first announced the adoption of this technology in 2021.

Project Cosmos was first seen outside the shipyard's shed in March 2023 during its technical launch in Rendsburg. The yacht was then towed to Kiel for further outfitting before being returned to Rendsburg for final finishing.

Project Cosmos stands out with its unique futuristic design, which sets it apart from most 100-meter megayachts. Unlike the typical "layered cake" appearance of large yacht superstructures, Project Cosmos features a two-level glass pavilion that stretches from the bow to the midsection of the hull. Additionally, the yacht is topped with a semi-circular glass dome, reminiscent of a flying saucer.

“This is a rather special project to coincide with our 150th anniversary,” says Peter Lürssen. “While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history – COSMOS is undoubtedly one of those yachts.”

The yacht has an estimated gross tonnage of approximately 6,300 GT and a beam of 18 meters. Its exterior and interior design were crafted by renowned designer Marc Newson.

One of the most striking and immediately recognisable features of COSMOS is the large, glass-domed private owner’s study, complete with a sky terrace. The study itself was a complex feat of glass engineering. Lürssen developed a custom solution to bend large sections of thick glass, free of imperfections and with crystal clarity, creating undisturbed 360-degree panoramic vistas from this commanding perch atop the vessel. The adjoining sky terrace offers the owner a personal al fresco space directly connected to the study.

The open aft deck seamlessly blends utility with comfort. Its centrepiece is a swimming pool and Jacuzzi arrangement, flanked by comfortable seating, and aft lies a dry dock, which operates with a sledge to launch and retrieve her largest supporting tender.

Project Cosmos is equipped with an innovative methanol-powered fuel-cell propulsion system. The energy powering the engines and onboard systems is generated through an electrochemical reaction—methanol oxidation. The byproducts of this process include water vapor, a small amount of carbon dioxide, and heat, which can be utilized for purposes such as heating the water in the onboard pool.

This advanced technology allows the yacht to operate with zero emissions while at anchor for up to 15 days or cruise at low speeds for up to 1,000 nautical miles.

Engineered for long-range, remote cruising, COSMOS spans six decks and is reinforced to Ice Class 1D, enabling safe operation in light ice conditions. Her capabilities open up the possibility of exploring all five major oceans and all seven continents.
