Bertone Runabout concept to go into production

The Italian brand will offer collectors a reincarnation of the legendary 1969 barchetta.
Bertone has started accepting applications from potential buyers for the Runabout, a limited edition sports car inspired by the 1969 concept of the same name.

The 1969 Runabout concept, crafted by the renowned Italian designer Marcello Gandini, heralded significant shifts in automotive aesthetics that emerged in the 1970s. This two-seat, open-top Barchetta was characterized by sharp lines reminiscent of contemporary speedboats and a wedge-shaped silhouette, a hallmark of Gandini's later masterpieces, including the Lancia Stratos and Lamborghini Countach. The design featured not only curves and a pointed nose akin to boats but also a doorless body, a roll bar behind the driver and passenger seats, and air intakes on the rear engine compartment lid.

Today, Bertone reimagines the Runabout with an updated design that pays homage to the 1969 original, now incorporating doors and a removable hardtop. The new Runabout will be equipped with a V6 engine producing over 500 bhp, a significant upgrade from the 50 bhp inline four used in the prototype. It will be available in two versions: the Barchetta, which has no roof or windscreen, and the Targa, featuring a removable roof for added versatility.

Notably, the Runabout will be part of Bertone's Classic collection, celebrating icons of automotive history. Production is set to commence in 2026, with an estimated price tag of $380,000.
